TheMotto No. 16. If this was life as we used to know it, LeBron James and his Lakers would probably right now be battling the Clippers for the NBA Western Conference. In the real life we’re living right now, James is sipping some vino and sharing his thoughts on The Last Dance. Yesterday, James sat with his creative comrades — Maverick Carter and Paul “PR” Rivera — to talk about the first time he met Jordan, in 2001. “I didn’t think he was real,” James said. “I only thought he lived in the TV. Or Come Fly With Me.” LeBron also breaks down how the doc reinforced his love for basketball, and his disappointment in Jordan’s 1998 retirement. The below is ESPN’s highlight reel. what more can I say:
The internets tend to get this one wrong: the RIAA says It’s Dark and Hell is Hot dropped today in 1998 (as opposed to the oft-cited May 12). DMX’s debut takes me back to my days as music editor of The Source, and working with a brilliant and hungry A&R rep named Irv Gotti. This is pre-Murder Inc. Lorenzo and he stayed terrorizing me. Ha! Seriously, Irv was driven in his belief that X was going be hip-hop’s next superstar. One time we were on the phone and I said, “Yeah this is good…think he’ll go gold.” Irv snapped. “Gold?! Five million. Five million, Elliott! He’s 2Pac!” The album came damn close, certified at four million, and if I’m wrong I know Irv’ll tell me.
As they were being created, I was blessed to receive advance cassettes by messenger to my office: various mixes of “Damien,” plus “How’s It Goin’ Down,” before the third verse was laid. I used to bump “Stop Being Greedy” so loud in my office that the speakers rattled. What a rush. I felt invincible. Congratulations to X on this album. Thank you for the memories. Verzuz is my shit but in 2020, I don’t wanna see the Dog vs. anyone. He already won.
We started something.
